If you've been in therapy before, you're likely aware that it can be a life-changing endeavor. If you haven't, you may not know what to look for in a therapist or counselor. Either way, you might not know what questions you should ask a potential psychotherapist.

Often when most people consider psychotherapy, they've tried just about everything else to create adjustments to their lives. Yet nothing has helped - certainly not for very long. When emotional suffering becomes anguish, it's not at all unusual for people to ask themselves, "Why not try therapy? I have to to stop the pain."

Sadly, any time we're suffering a lot, we often don't think well, and numerous people turn to counseling and psychotherapy (be it for individual psychotherapy, couples therapy, or family counseling) without questioning the potential counselor.

But the truth is, there is much more to choosing a mental health professional besides lifting up a phone and making an appointment.

Asking the Right Questions

Almost any person can refer to themselves as a counselor, so finding an individual to work with on the basis of this title provides limited information about the person's qualifications, education or background and hardly any protection if you receive inadequate service.

Titles, such as marriage and family therapist, licensed clinical social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist can only be used by persons with the corresponding credentials who've received specific education and training.

Furthermore, licensed mental health practitioners such as these should be members in good standing with their respective licensing bodies. Verifying this information will allow you to know something about the education and training the mental health provider has received and provide you some degree of protection in the event your receive poor or improper treatment.

However, verifying a counselor's license and credentials doesn't provide much information about their specific training, expertise and whether they'll be able to meet your needs.

The only way you can know if a counselor or therapist is qualified to provide you the services you need is to ask them direct questions, such as:

What age ranges do you treat?

What issues do you handle?

What kind of education and training have you had?

How many years have you been providing therapy?

Have you been in therapy?

How do you work with people to help them get well?

Do you belong to any professional organizations?

Do you update your education and training?

You needn't ask all of these - especially in a first session when you need a lot of time to talk yourself. But do ask them. And trust your sense of safety with the therapist in the first session. One of the most important determinants of successful counseling is the connection or "fit" between you and your therapist. If you don't feel comfortable and safe with the therapist you're working with, it will be nearly impossible for you to do the deep honest work necessary to heal and grow.

Beyond ascertaining the credentials, training, and competencies of a therapist and how relaxed and secure you are using them, the therapist will want to ask several questions regarding you and your situation. They too need to ensure there is a good match relating your personality, expectations and aims with who they are and the treatments they provide.

The therapist is likely to ask you what brings you to counseling, as well as about your family and overall background. They will often also inquire about your childhood, schooling, social relationships, intimate partnerships, professional and current circumstances.

Don't forget, even excellent counselors aren't going to be the most helpful for every individual, and no therapist can competently treat anything and everything. When considering a therapist, have them provide an example of a problem that is outside the extent of their practice, or that they are insufficiently educated to treat. If they can't or do not reply, you've just done away with a prospect. Every mental health professional should be prepared to refer you to other providers at your request.

Where to Begin Your Search

To identify a therapist or counselor suited to you, start off your research by asking a doctor, local clergy or some other professionals you trust for referrals.

You can even ask trusted friends or family, or you can browse the Internet for counselors near you. Just remember, a first-class advertisement or website doesn't make a counselor experienced or suitable. Ask the counselor about their credentials and experience directly, regardless of whether you obtain a recommendation from a reliable person.

Similar to determining any professional to work with, doing due diligence and making a thorough assessment about whom to use will increase the chance that therapy will meet your needs and allow you to achieve your objectives. You shouldn't be self-conscious or frightened to ask point-blank questions... After all, your future health, well-being and happiness is at stake!

Dreams of falling are by far one of most common dreams we experience, yet is one of the most feared type of dream. This type of dream can be as simple as falling out of bed or it can be as extreme as falling from a building, mountain, ladder, cliff or out of a airplane with no parachute, to name just a few.

But regardless of the height you're falling from in a dream, the encounter is generally terrifying for the dreamer, because of the complete lost of physical control the dreamer experiences in the dream that is often compounded by a sudden overwhelming fear of dying or hurt in the dream. As a result of this type of dream, the dreamer generally awakes in a hyperventilated state, filled with anxiety, sweating, struggling for breath and heart pounding as if it is about to burst out of their chest.

Common Causes Of Falling Dreams

Although there are many reason why a person experiences dreams of falling, the most common seem to be: guilt, fear of a situation, problem, crisis or dilemma the dreamer is experiencing in the natural where they have little or no control over or answers for. As a result, the individual is generally suffering feelings of helplessness both physically and emotionally in the natural and in their dream states, often opening the chance for experiencing a dream of falling a near falling down type of dream.

Often the extent or the emotional depth of the falling dream is determined by the intensity of the guilt, situation, problem, crisis or dilemma the dreamer is experiencing in the natural in their awake states.

Although Falling Dreams are most often the result of a loss of power, fear, guilt or no control, there is yet another factor that often plays into the psyche of the dreamer's dream equation, and that is self punishment. It is not uncommon for a dreamer, because of a loss of power, control and guilt to subconsciously try to punish themselves in their dream state because they believe either consciously or subconsciously that they are responsible and should carry the blame of others for the events occurring in their lives.

Other Causes For Falling Dreams

Doubt, a rebellious attitude, lies of deception, betrayal, indecision, fear, confusion, and being in denial to a truth compel dreams of falling. Also represented may be insecurity in a marriage, relationship, family dynamic, career, workplace and finances.

Among other causes of Falling Dreams can be the result of an inferiority or inadequacy the dreamer has or feels he has in regards to his career, workplace, relationships, marriage that is causing the dreamer to feel he is not going to measure up to the challenges demanded of him.

Based on the dreamer's circumstances, dreams of falling can be the result of shame, sorrow, lack of confidence or pride in oneself in regards to the dreamer's lifetime accomplishments. And because of these feelings, the dreamer often feels that he is looked down on and many time not accepted or made to feel included with others.

To the Christian, falling most often represents and is symbolic of sin or a demonic attack on their finances, career, workplace or a family member through others.

Bipolar disorder is also known as BPD or perhaps known as manic depression and is a disorder that's characterized by severe mood swings. Moodiness happens to all of us; however, a person that has bipolar disorder suffers from extremes of both major depression and extreme enjoyment as well as over optimism.

Sometimes it is dangerous since the depression may be so severe these people can't function during those times and think about or even act out thoughts of suicide. On the other hand, the excited (upswing) may lead to risky conduct such as over spending, and activities they might not normally participate in.

Many persons with bipolar mood disorder may also enjoy times of normality between the mood swings where they function and feel much like everyone else. Certain people with BPD might experience mood swings often and of shorter duration and others could have lengthier durations of each mood.

Bipolar disorder may start as early as the teen years but a diagnosis may be delayed because the moodiness could be ignored as being normal teen moodiness or even attributed to ADHD. By age 25, the symptoms are more definite and a diagnosis made less difficult.

Further complicating a proper diagnosis of BPD is the fact an individual might experience mixed states and have signs and symptoms of both depressive and manic states present at the same time.

The cause of BPD are not known, some researchers believe there might be a hereditary connection however research results are inconsistent. However, persons that later develop BPD may display signs and symptoms in childhood. Based on some research the signs and symptoms are so subtle they can be easily mistaken as normal behavior or another matter like ADHD.

Adults being affected by BPD will have difficulties in most aspects of their lives. The high periods cause these people to become over upbeat, engage in high risk conduct, as well as be financially indiscreet or sexually promiscuous. These issues can be endless.

During periods of depression, the individual struggling with bipolar mood disorder may not be in a position to function or to maintain employment. Committing suicide can be a danger also.

There's a lot of drugs that might be used to deal with BPD. The explanation for that is that though certain prescription drugs are effective on some individuals, other people show absolutely no signs of improvement.

Lithium is the only prescription medication proven to reduce the occurrence of committing suicide in despondent BPD patients. The drug Lamotrigine has been shown to be successful in protecting against depression symptoms in some bipolar sufferers. Antipsychotic drugs might be used to treat agitation of the BPD patient while in the manic phases.

When signs and symptoms are relieved and mood swings are in remission the affected person still must continue taking the medication or a backslide is likely. Certain people with BPD describe the effect of the medicine as causing them to feel dull or drugged. This complicates treatment compliance with sufferers with BPD.

There are successful treatments for persons with bipolar disorder and mood stabilizers can be a major portion of the treatment plan when helping stabilize the patient with bipolar disorder. Because the moodiness may be so harmful to personal relationships, financial status and job performance BPD is going to be treated aggressively in most instances.

If you have ever experienced a break up, you probably wondered what went wrong and how to get your ex back. Most people have experienced some kind of a break up. While some are doing their best to move on, some are looking for ways to get their ex back. You know it takes some work to get an ex back.

Breaking up does not mean that you cannot get back together with your ex. Ninety percent of the time there is really no reason why you cannot get an ex back after a break up. You just need to learn the steps necessary to win your ex back.

Learning what happened that caused the break up in the first place is the first step in getting your ex back. Although you cannot change what happened in the past, you can learn from the mistakes and you can grow from the experiences.

You need to figure out what went wrong in the first place. Your break up might have happened from one event or it may have occurred from several things. No matter what the reason was that led to the breakup, you need to get it figured out so you can deal with it should it come up again if you want to make the reconcillation last the long term,

Be sure you are not coming off as a needy person. Don't make it obvious that you cannot live without your ex. Stay strong. Be self confident. You will have a better chance of getting back together if your ex knows that you are doing just fine by yourself.

Never be nasty or try to get back at your ex. Trying to make your ex jealous is not a good idea. You do not want your ex to move on because he thinks you have. You want your ex to see you doing well but you do not want to inspire him or her to completely move on. The goal is to get back together.

Above all else, analyze what went wrong and find out what the problem was. Find out what caused the arguments. Find out which needs weren't being met and work on rectifying those issues.

Good luck to you. For more great techniques, principles and advice, I would like to recommend the The Magic Of Making Up. It has helped hundreds of men and women just like you win back the mind, heart and soul of the ones they love.

by July C. Peters

Infertility primarily concerns to the biological inability of a woman to get pregnant. Infertility may also refer to the state of a woman who is unable to carry a pregnancy to full term. There are many biological reasons for infertility. On this article we are going to study acupuncture as a solution to infertility.

Acupuncture along with a few other methods are quickly becoming much more popular as more and more people are becoming aware of their effectiveness in resolving the heartache and misery which infertility causes.

The practice of acupuncture has been used for a long time to treat many causes of infertility. The risks involved are minimal when using acupuncture as a fertility treatment. If incorrect acupuncture points are used when a woman is pregnant, then it can cause a risk of miscarriage. So it is good advice to look for an experienced practioner in this case.

Infertility is an issue that affects roughly 10% of the total US population and so as can be plainly seen, this means that there are a significant number of people who are directly affected by this problem. Many of these unfortunate people seek refuge in the assistance provided by traditional forms of treatment which are not entirely bulletproof given that they have side effects and risks associated with them.

Part of the problem is directly a socioeconomic one in that progress made in the female equal rights lobby has meant that more women are now actively pursuing their careers. That fact shows that women are delaying the time to get pregnant.

If a woman is diagnosed by her physician as being infertile then they will most likely be subject to a predictable regime of hormone therapy, surgical procedures.

An Odd Combination?

Acupuncture and fertility may seem like a rather curious combination indeed but rest assured that if you are having infertility problems then acupuncture is an extremely effective means of resolving such issues. Circulation of blood around the body is an essential process and it is especially important in the context of the pregnant woman/woman trying to conceive.

Thanks to the progress that have been made in relation to childbirth and midwifery, this has meant that it is now fairly straightforward for a woman to give birth in her thirties and even later than this. Acupuncture and infertility have been tested beyond a doubt and so if you are woman and infertile due to some complication of the ovary then acupuncture is the perfect way to remediate this issue.

Stuttering is an issue that affects many people. This problem can cause people who would normally be very sociable adults to become reserved. The fear of stuttering makes the search for stuttering help a personal one.

There are different ways to tackle the problem of stuttering. Some techniques that have been known to work are exercise, self motivation, therapy, and hypnosis.

An exercise that has been use to help stutterers find relief is yoga. Yoga provides a relaxing atmosphere which can be a form of stuttering help because many stutterers suffer from anxiety.

Speech therapy can also be an effective alternative. Being able to control breathing can help stutterers become more patient when pronouncing syllables. The ability to control breathing plays a big role in helping stutterers find a cure.

Self help is definitely not out of the question. Some stutterers have taught themselves to speak properly by practicing difficult syllables in front of a mirror.

Many women have a sex drive problem. To fill this need, of course, the pharmaceutical companies are more than willing to provide drugs to "solve" this problem. The side effects of these drugs are incredibly pronounced and often dangerous. Some of the drugs are known cause hair growth on the face, chest and some can potentially cause breast cancer.

If your sex drive is down, here are some of the top ways to increase your sexual appetite without any adverse reactions like hair growth on the face, chest, and arms. Here are some great natural cures for decreased sexual appetite.

Exercise happens to be one of the best ways that you can improve your sex drive. If you are dealing with low libido, then maybe you need to exercise more and get in better shape. When you work out you'll improve blood flow and your body will start releasing endorphins, which put you in a better mood. After working out testosterone levels go up within an hour, which may make you feel sexy.

An important consideration when it comes to exercise, however, is that you must be sure to not overtrain. Over training can actually reduce your sex hormones thereby causing your sex drive to drop even lower. Definitely not what you want.

Stress is a big no, no if your goal is to improve libido. You have to take time out for yourself and give yourself time to relax. You'll notice a marked increase in your libido if you do this.

When you have high levels of stress, cortisol is produced. This rapidly depletes your testosterone levels and makes your sex drive drop like a rock. Try yoga or meditation to reduce your stress levels.

Another way to increase libido is with some natural supplements. Some supplements like Ginko Biloba are considered safe and worth trying.

To really juice up your sex life, you may want to consider another natural supplement. Try vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the proper function and production of your the sex hormones like testosterone.

You don't have to resort to medications to improve your sex life. There are many natural methods to improving sex drive in women. Considering using these tips in your own life. You'll be surprised how much of a difference they can make. Of course work on your mind as well. When it comes to sex drive, the state of your mind has a lot to do with it to. So work on thinking sexy thoughts along with these natural treatments to help give that libido a boost.

by Susan May

For most women, learning that they are going to give birth to a child is one of the most exciting things that can happen in life. It is such exciting news that no woman wants to feel like anything can ruin the good news.

The reality is that many women go through a range of physical and emotional symptoms while they are pregnant. One symptom that is not discussed very often is anxiety or having panic attacks. Panic attacks during pregnancy may just be a result of higher hormone levels, but it may be something that will need to be addressed by a physician.

Anxiety during pregnancy is somewhat normal. Thoughts about what kind of parent you'll be, how the childbirth experience really is, and how you look through all the stages of pregnancy are common to most women. It becomes a concern when these thoughts make you feel out of control or that you're losing touch with reality.

There are physical symptoms of a panic attack like feeling faint, heart racing, trembling or shaking, or sweating. These anxiety episodes will not be good for the mother, or for the baby, so it is important to develop techniques to diminish or eliminate the attacks without medicine.

Having a panic attack while pregnant can be very scary. You don't want to perpetuate the cycle of fear by thinking that you might have a panic attack at any time. Learning a few techniques to help alleviate anxiety before it begins may help prepare for possible episodes.

Establish a relaxation routine so you're better able to handle a panic attack should one occur. One method is to visualize a quiet and peaceful place, take a deep breath, and remain there until you feel yourself calm. We'll talk about deep breathing exercises, too.

The listed suggestions will help you create a relaxation routine:

Getting in the habit of doing the relaxation exercises a couple of times a day will help establish a routine. Make sure it's at a time when you're least likely to be interrupted so you can easily follow your schedule.

Refrain from scheduling your relaxation practices near bedtime since sleepiness could get in the way.

Pick a stress reduction exercise that you're familiar and comfortable with.

Stress Relief through Deep Breathing:

Deep breathing exercises are one of the easiest and most effective ways to relax and increase circulation to your entire body. The following method will be the most effective:

* Sit straight with one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach.

*While breathing through your nose enough to feel your stomach rise and your chest move slightly.

*Use your mouth to exhale and push the air out with as much force as possible.

*Continue breathing and notice how your lower abdomen rises and falls.

Muscle Relaxation, Yoga and Meditation:

*An effective method for relaxing your body and mind is to do a series of exercises where you tense and relax each muscle group in your body. Find a comfortable position, either on the floor or bed and take some slow deep breaths. To create tension in your muscles, squeeze them tightly to a count of three and then slowly let go. Concentrate on releasing the tension until you feel them relax. Start at your feet and slowly move up your body until you've reached the top of your head.

*Two other methods of relieving stress are the practices of meditation and yoga. Gentle stretching along with focused visualization can help to relieve anxiety and tension.

Create a plan for how you're going to handle a panic attack while pregnant so you don't have the additional stress of not knowing what to do. There are alternatives to medication for panic attacks in pregnancy.

by Anne Durrell

Detecting ADHD is commonly done with an ADHD test. It has nothing to do with any blood test since ADHD is a mental disorder, not diagnosable through basic medical tests.

The American Psychiatric Association

APA or American Psychiatric Association has made a list of fourteen behavioral checkpoints to test for ADHD. According to their checklist, children must show at least eight of the checkpoints to be diagnosed with ADHD.

Observation Test for Problems with ADHD Behavioral

So many children are misdiagnosed as having ADHD. One of the major reasons that ADHD is misdiagnosed is that testing is purely observational and so biased.

A doctor giving test may be less able to accept certain behavior than any other doctor would be and may say it as a trouble when other doctor would consider it normal. Because of this, ADHD testing is often done as a collaborative effort where teacher, parents and doctors all give their thoughts about a child's behavior.

It is also not seldom for parents to consider their child has ADHD just because they are with them more often and regular ADHD behaviors can be not easy to deal with. A kid can only be considered to have a problem when they are showing a sign frequently on everyday life.

ADHD Test Sample

The following is a sample of checklist items that would be found on a comprehensive ADHD test:

* Is lazy at school

* Substance abuse, learning troubles or family history of ADD or ADHD

* Easily distracted.

* Cannot pay attention to any detail

* Intelligible writing.

* Cannot listen

* Cannot remember

* Troubles with learning things

* Appear agitated

* Nervous or anxious behavior

* Poor interaction skills

* Trouble controlling impulses

* Easily getting bored

* Careless speaking

* Irritated

* Careless mistakes

* Cannot organized

by Anne Durrell

Bipolar medication is required on a consistent basis and is usually part of a lifelong treatment of the disorder. There is no cure for bipolar, so medication is the best chance for keeping symptoms at bay.

Bipolar Medication is important

Bipolar medication will help a person with the disorder to elevate symptoms so they can live a normal life. Medication is usually combined with therapy to provide an overall treatment of the disorder.

If the disorder stops taking their medicine, though, it is very much likely that warning signs will return swiftly. The disorder should never go off their medication without consulting with the doctor.

The types of Medication Used

Bipolar syndrome is a mood disorder, which is characterize by the mood changes from very highs to very lows and Lithium is the common meds used for the disorders.

Sometimes, anti depressants and anti seizure meds are used. Generally, though, moos stabilizers are the very first thing and tried before other meds.

It can take as long as two weeks for the mood stabilizing med to start working. So that it is very important for doctor to explain that the medication may take some time to work.

Lithium

Many people know how Lithium works, since it is the oldest drug used and it is the most commonly used medication for bipolar disorders. It is widely known very safe and any troubles with the medications are showed very quickly.

The common side effects from lithium include:

* Fatigue

* A serious Diarrhea

* Nausea

* Frequent urination

* Trembles

* Over weight

The bipolar medication used will be taken based on the individual patient. For some people, bipolar does not cause main mood change, but only the episodes are serious.

Occasionally, a doctor will check the patient's mood changes to find out the best bipolar medications would be. But for some people, the depressive attack generally most severe and that is when they would need an anti depressant.
