Omega 3 Cures Depression.

by Peter Bertonich

If you have depression you know how bad it can be. It's a sometimes daily marry go round of pharmaceuticals, doctors visits and ups and downs. But now good news is emerging the something simple like Omega 3 cures depression, or if not cures it can certainly help relieve depression.

Gradually researchers began to see a link, around the 1990, between higher rates of seafood consumption in some societies, and lower rates of depression, and vice versa. And seafood is natures best source of Omega 3 fats for our diet.

Studies have now shown strong links between increasing Omega 3 intake and lowering rates of depression. Of course science moves slowly and it is always difficult to say when the link is fully proven, and what recommendations may be drawn from it. But the results of the studies are extremely encouraging.

But there is always more work to be done. Each study raises more questions, like what specific conditions are affected, what dose should be taken, how the intake of Omega 3 can affect current pharmaceuticals that sufferers are taking and so on.

But it is still under study, there is good news for those currently suffering from depression. They will know all about the negative side effects of taking the various pharmaceuticals prescribed as anti depressants. But there are no known negative side effects from increasing the levels of Omega 3 in the diet, and many positive health benefits in general.

In fact there is very strong evidence that taking a daily supplement of fish oil is good for a wide range of health problems. No lesser an authority than the American Heart Association recommends eating at least 2 meals of fish purely for the positive health effects of the fish oil on the heart. Or taking fish oil supplements.

There is good evidence of a range of heart benefits from Omega 3 supplementation, and there are no significant reports of any negative side effects.

One issue does arise though. Testing does show that many fish, or in the words of the EPA, all fish, is contaminated to some degree with various toxins like heavy metals, mercury or PCBs. So it is recommended that not too much fish ought to be eaten.

However there are excellent fish oil supplements available on the market that are molecularly distilled, reducing the level of any potential contaminants to zero. The better fish oil supplements have no detectable levels of the major contaminants, and allow us to take our Omega 3 fish oil daily.

So although it isn't fully proven, if you suffer from depression there are strong reasons to take daily Omega 3 supplements. They are good for your health generally, as they are for all of us, and so you are only going to be healthier generally. And they may cure, or help, your depression.
