Want to beat the winter blues? Want to eliminate stress? See & experience life yourself with a new & beautiful dimension to it.

Clinical depression goes by many names -depression, "the blues," biological depression, major depression. But it all refers to the same thing: feeling sad and depressed for weeks or months at a time, accompanied by feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy, and taking little or no pleasure in things that gave you joy in the past.

Clinical depression is an awful disease. Depression turns its victims into shells of their former selves; depression patients are stripped of all the hope and joy and emotional vitality that make life worth living in the first place. The good news, though, is that depression treatment really does work, and that the right depression treatment center really can help you rediscover the world as you used to know it.

Yes, depression treatment centers are places of hope, and of healingbut they're also places of effort and of struggle, places where depression treatment patients get better only by virtue of the commitment they bring to the depression treatment process. There's no gentle way out of the depression wilderness. If you want to get better, you're going to have to work for it.

Depression matters, simply put, because depression victims matter. More to the point, depression treatment matters because depression treatment programs give depression treatment patients cause for hope, and for faith; depression treatment matters because it works, and because it saves lives. In the fight against depression, you'll never have a greater ally than a depression treatment center you can trust.

If you've made it this far, you don't have to be told how debilitating depression can be. What matters, now, is that you're ready to take the first step: that you're ready to enroll in a depression treatment program, and let depression treatment professionals help you get better. Please, for your own sake, make today the day you decide to start fixing tomorrow.

The right depression treatment center makes a world of difference in the depression treatment process. If you're going to get healed, you need depression treatment that meets your individual needs, and serves your individual interests; you need depression treatment that addresses you as you actually are, without resorting to generalities or supposedly "universal" treatment solutions. If you're going to win the fight against clinical depression, you might say, you're going to have to win it on your own terms, get started today.

Bipolar disorder is a very serious disease that can have symptoms that range from mild to very severe. The ups and downs or highs and lows that a person suffering from bipolar disorder goes through are not the same as what a person who does not suffer from it experiences every now and again. A person with bipolar disorder will experience mood swings that can range from low (which is depression) to high or very high (which is mania). This type of disease sometimes gets confused with other forms of depression and therefore requires attention and a proper diagnosis.

Bipolar disorder is a type of brain disorder that can make the most ordinary and normal of moods appear very extreme. Sometimes referred to as manic depression or manic-depressive illness, this disorder is characterized by unusual extremes and highs and lows of mood, activity levels, energy and the ability to do regular everyday tasks such as get out of bed and go to work in the morning.

The causes of bipolar disorder are not completely understood by the medical community. However, doctors have noted that it does tend to run in families and therefore a genetic predisposition to develop it is suspected. It is believed that bipolar disorder is related to certain chemicals in the brain that have gotten out of balance. When this happens, it then makes it more difficult for the brain to do its work. Doctors also believe that bipolar disorder and hormone levels are connected with each other. Studies have shown that a link exists between the development of bipolar disorder and thyroid hormone levels.

Bipolar disorder can affect individuals of all different races and ethnic backgrounds. This is a disorder that has nothing to do with socioeconomic status, education level or chosen profession. Bipolar disorder often appears when an individual is in their teenage or young adult years. However it has often been known to show itself in children as young as six years of age and in older adults. Studies have shown that women who suffer from bipolar disorder tend to experience more depression then men do, and are at a higher risk for rapid cycling. Rapid cycling is when a person suffers from four or more mood episodes in any given year. Mood episodes or simply episodes are the name given to the mood swings that an individual who has been diagnosed with this disorder goes through.

Bipolar disorder is frequently mistaken for depression. Depression can be sneaky in that it can sometimes obscure other elements that point to a bipolar diagnosis. If substance abuse is added to the picture then it can become even murkier and may remain undiagnosed for a lengthy period of time.

Approximately half of all individuals who suffer from bipolar disorder visited three professional members of the healthcare community before a proper diagnosis was made. In the same way, an estimated 20 percent of those who go to see their doctor because they are depressed actually suffer from bipolar disorder. It is a sorry state of affairs to discover that it takes an average of 10 years for a person with bipolar disorder who is showing the symptoms to begin treatment and therapy, because it often takes this length of time for the diagnosis to be made.

Bipolar depression, also known as manic depressive disorder, is a serious form of depression that can't be ignored. Manic depressive psychosis can affect all aspects of a person's life, from their job to their relationships.

Manic depression, also called bipolar disorder, is a psychological illness that causes a mood disturbance. This mood disturbance can cause significant impairment and disruption of the person's life.

Symptoms Of manic depression affect the person cognitively, emotionally, physically, and behaviorally. Weird ability, euphoria, and depression are common emotional symptoms of manic depression.

A decreased need for sleep, fatigue, changes in sex drive, changes in appetite, and fidgeting behavior are some physical symptoms of manic depression. The fidgeting behavior common during episodes of depression is clinically referred to as psychomotor agitation. During a depressive episode, the person may also experience slowed physical actions referred to as psychomotor retardation.

During manic and depressive episodes, the person can experience increases or decreases in sex drive and appetite. Some people make experience increased appetite or decreased appetite during a depressive episode. Manic episodes often cause an increase in sex drive.

During a manic episode, the person may not become tired as usual and may feel as if they do not need to sleep. Depression can cause a person to have insomnia or to sleep more than usual.

Cognitive symptoms of manic depression can include perceptions of worthlessness and difficulty concentrating associated with depressive episodes. Racing thoughts, increased talkativeness, increased focus and goal-oriented activities, and distractibility are common symptoms of manic depression.

And increased involvement in activities for pleasure without regard to consequences is a behavioral symptom of manic episodes. During a manic episode, the person may engage in drug use or sexual indiscretions even if they would not normally do those things.

While mania causes the person to seek out pleasure, depression inhibits the person from experiencing pleasure. During a depression, the person may lose interest in activities that they once enjoyed.

Both depression and mania can cause psychotic symptoms. Psychotic symptoms are hallucinations or delusions that are not based in reality. The hallucinations and delusions of manic depression are different from those caused by schizophrenia. Hallucinations and delusions from manic depression are related to feelings of euphoria, guilt, or depression.

For example, someone who has manic may have the delusion that they have a superpower related to feelings of euphoria. Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts are severe symptoms of episodes of depression. If the symptoms of manic depression become bothersome, the person may need an adjustment in their medication to better control the symptoms.

Sheila Wilson explains what are the common manic depression symptoms and how to spot bipolar disorder in children in the early days.
Bipolar disorder is sometimes referred to as manic depression. Life of a manic depressive patient can be mildly to severely affected by bipolar disorder.

Manic depression is characterized by mood disturbances known as depression and mania. In addition to episodes of mania and depression, the person may have milder forms of mania called hypomania or mild forms of depression called dysthymia.

Mania and depression can be stressful and sometimes overwhelming. Mania can cause a decreased need for sleep, impulsively, euphoria, and irritability.

Depressive episodes can be a severe enough to cause suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. Dealing with a mood disturbance can cause the person to question their normal moods. If a person feels sad or even just discontent, the person may wonder if it is the beginning of a depressive episode.

When symptoms of both mania and depression are present, the person is having a mixed episode. Some people with bipolar disorder feel that mixed episodes are the most frustrating form of bipolar disorder symptoms. During a mixed episode, the person may alternate between feeling depressed and hopeless and feeling euphoric and invincible. The switching of the mood can occur as often as several times an hour.

During episodes of mania or depression, the person may do things that they would normally not do. For example, a person who is financially responsible may waste hundreds of dollars during a manic episode. This can cause a great deal of frustration for the person with the disorder and their families.

Life for manic depressive patient may be focused on coping with the disorder. Symptoms may interfere with the person's ability to hold a job or have relationships.

Unfortunately, there is no medical testing to determine which medication will effectively manage the symptoms. The right combination of medications must be found by trial and error which is a process that could take years.

In addition to medication, therapy can help the manic depressive patient cope with the illness. Many manic depressive patients use art, writing, relaxation techniques, and hobbies to help cope with the stress of the disorder.

Late adolescence and early adulthood are the typical age of the onset of bipolar disorder. Sometimes, the onset of the disorder interferes with person's ability to attend college or focus on their career. Bipolar disorder can be a life-altering illness.

by Sheila Wilson

Manic attacks is not a common psychological term. While this term may have been used in the past, periods of mania are commonly referred to as manic episodes, mania, or episodes of mania.

If someone has bipolar disorder, it does not mean that their mood is constantly disturbed by the illness. They may have periods of days, weeks, or even years without a mood disturbance. When symptoms of mania emerge, people may call this a manic attack.

A manic episode is characterized by a period of time during which the person has a persistently elevated or irritable mood. In order to be considered a true manic episode, the symptoms must be present for at least one week or be severe enough to require hospitalization.

If the person has an irritable mood, the person must have four other symptoms of mania for it to be considered a manic episode. If the person has an elevated mood, the person only needs to have three more symptoms of mania for it to be considered a manic episode.

The other symptoms of mania are: inflated self-esteem, increase talking, decreased need for sleep, distractibility, racing thoughts or flight of ideas, increased focus on attaining goals, and excessive involvement in activities for pleasure without regard to the consequences.

For the mania symptoms to be considered for a bipolar diagnosis, the symptoms must interfere with a person's daily life and ability to function normally. The symptoms cannot be caused by a physical illness, drugs, or medications to be considered symptoms of mania.

Bipolar I disorder is characterized by the presence of manic episodes. The frequency and severity of the manic symptoms often decrease with proper treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy and mood-stabilizing drugs are common components of treatment for bipolar I disorder.

Some people who use the term manic attacks may be confusing this with the term panic attacks. Panic attacks are related to anxiety and not a mood disturbance. A panic attack causes physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety such as shallow breathing, increased heart rate, and fear or dread.

by Sheila Wilson

Manic episodes are the defining symptoms of bipolar I disorder. The characteristics of manic episodes are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) which is the book used to diagnose mental illnesses.

The fundamental symptom of manic episodes is either an abnormally elevated mood or irritable mood. The mood disturbance must last at least one week or cause hospitalization in order to be considered a true manic episode.

An elevated mood requires three other manic symptoms during the mood disturbance to be considered a manic episode. The presence of irritability needs to have four other manic symptoms to constitute a manic episode.

Grandiosity or elevated self-esteem is a possible symptom of mania. During manic episodes, people often need less sleep than usual. The person may only sleep a few hours and not feel tired.

Being talkative is a symptom of mania. A manic episode may cause racing thoughts which is observable by others as a flight of ideas.

Another symptom of manic episodes is distractibility. The person may be easily distracted and have difficulty focusing. A possible symptom of mania is an increased involvement in goal-oriented activities.

Many problems that a person has during a manic episode are associated with the last symptom of mania which is an increased involvement of pleasurable activities without considering the consequences. Someone in a manic episode may spend money excessively or become promiscuous due to that symptom.

Manic episodes can cause psychotic episodes. The psychotic symptoms of hallucinations or delusions from a manic episode are related to the grandiosity the person may be experiencing. For example, the person may believe that they have been chosen by God for some special task.

If the symptoms have been caused by drug use, medication, or medical condition, they are not considered symptoms of a manic episode. The symptoms must cause impairment in the persons ability to function at work, school, home, or in relationships for it to be considered a manic episode.

by Sheila Wilson

Though bipolar III is not an official psychiatric diagnosis, it is often used to refer to extremely mild bipolar disorder. Bipolar III is not listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), the reference book used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental illnesses.

People use the term bipolar III to refer to a mild form of bipolar disorder called cyclothymia. Cyclothymia is an official psychiatric diagnosis. Hypomania caused by antidepressants is also referred to as bipolar III.

Cyclothymia is a mild form of bipolar disorder that causes recurrent episodes of depression that are not severe enough to meet the criteria for clinical depression. These depressive episodes may be followed by episodes of hypomania. Cyclothymia is sometimes called soft bipolar since it is a mild form of bipolar disorder.

Cyclothymia may be diagnosed for people with recurrent depressive episodes even if they have never had an episode of hypomania if the person has a family history of bipolar disorder or a temperament with characteristics like optimism, overconfidence, extroverted, inflated self-esteem, and over-involvement in other peoples lives as well as a minimal need for sleep.

A sensitivity to a prescribed antidepressant or too high of a dosage of an antidepressant can cause hypomania. Hypomania from antidepressants is sometimes called bipolar III.

Prescribing antidepressant medication is not an exact science. It often relies on trial and error to find the best medication and dosage for the individual. However, once the correct medication and dosage is determined, antidepressants are often a crucial component of mood disorder treatment.

If the bipolar III is due to antidepressants, the psychiatrist will make adjustments to the dosage or change the prescribed medication. Bipolar III that is cyclothymia may be treated with medication and cognitive therapy.

The diagnosis of cyclothymia may be changed to bipolar I, bipolar II, or major depression if the persons symptoms change in severity and now meet the diagnostic criteria for one of those disorders. For example if someone with cyclothymia has an episode of depression that is severe enough to meet the diagnostic criteria for an episode of depression as outlined by the DSM, the persons diagnosis may be changed to major depression or bipolar II.

Bipolar I is a mental disorder that is also called manic depression. Bipolar I is one of three types of bipolar disorder. The main characteristics of bipolar disorder are episodes of depression and mania or euphoria that is not explained by the individuals situation.

To be diagnosed with bipolar I, the person must have experienced a manic or mixed episode. A manic episode causes symptoms of euphoria or irritability, difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts, insomnia, loss of judgment, impulsivity, and feelings of grandiosity or self-importance. People in manic episodes may talk more or faster than usual and may fidget.

Severe episodes of mania can cause hallucinations and delusions. The content of the hallucinations and delusions from mania are related to the other symptoms of the disorder. For example, someone who is experiencing an inflated self-esteem may have a delusion of being chosen by God or aliens for their superiority.

A mixed episode is considered a combination of symptoms of mania as well as symptoms of depression. The person having a mixed episode may fluctuate from feeling hopeless and depressed to feelings of self-importance and euphoria. The switching between the two can be very frustrating for the individual.

Experiencing a manic or mixed episode is what separates Bipolar I disorder from the other types of bipolar disorder. If a person with Bipolar II has their first mixed or manic episode, their diagnosis is likely to be changed to Bipolar I.

Cognitive therapy and psychiatric medications are used to treat Bipolar I. Cognitive therapy is used to help the person and their family cope with the symptoms of the disorder. Mood-stabilizers, like Depakote, are medications that help prevent the highs and lows of bipolar disorder.

Sometimes, people close to those with bipolar disorder become frustrated with the symptoms and expect the person with bipolar disorder to stop the symptoms. The individual with bipolar disorder cannot will the symptoms away just like someone with heart disease cannot make the condition go away.

People with Bipolar I disorder have different experiences. Even the same person may have very different experiences throughout their lifetime. Some people function very well with this disorder while others struggle day-to-day.

Even if the person is taking their medication and actively participating in therapy, there may be a relapse of symptoms. If the symptoms return or worsen, the person should notify their mental health professionals.

Manic depression or now called bipolar affective disorder, have millions of lives suffering from this mood disorder. Mood swings are but natural, but this mood disorder is way beyond the normal experiences of people. The disorder is characterized by extreme low depression and highs of an elated mood or mania. The frequency usually differs from one individual to another.

The cause of bipolar affective disorder is not yet established although experts claim that it has something to do with genetics and hormonal levels. There are also cases when other acquired illnesses of an individual cause bipolar disorder.

Everyday, a person experiences different emotions and events, and oftentimes these things trigger the mood swings. Coping up with happy events and unpleasant ones can put you in greater threat for depressive and manic episodes.

The triggers cause your mood swings. These are also called stressors, and it includes the following:

- not sleeping regularly

- drugs or alcohol misuse

- medication stoppage

- starting depression medicines or herbal products

- having medical conditions like thyroid problems

- seasonal changes

- illnesses

- holidays

- disagreements between family/friends

- work problems

- death of family member, friend, or loved one

- marital problems

- starting college or a new line of work

If you're diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder, you should be able to identify the triggers. You can do this by having your very own mood chart. You have to record all your emotions and the corresponding events that took place. After a while, you may now notice certain patterns.

Making your own mood chart is a tough job. It would be best to have a helpful talk with your family and trusted friends. You must also try to consult your therapist or healthcare provider. They may be able to help you more since they are not part of your life. You can better see things through their professional help.

After figuring out all the possible mood swing triggers, you have to learn to evade them. This involves action and would require you to avoid some of your bad habits. Your friends and family members should also be made aware of the triggers so that they can assist you in your struggle.

Bipolar affective disorder is not easily detected. In fact, many people may go for many years without being diagnosed. Unlike other illnesses and disorders, bipolar does not entail any laboratory test. The medical provider will simply use the MDQ. This is a questionnaire utilized for bipolar disorder; and the person conducting such questionnaire fills up the checklist based on the symptoms exhibited by the person. However, the checklist can only be used and given the right diagnosis by a medical provider.

There are several medications that can be used for treating bipolar affective disorder, including the following:

1. Mood Stabilizers " this medicine can relieve or delay depression and mania episodes.

2. Antidepressants " people having a depressive episode can use a mood stabilizer together with an antidepressant. If this medicine is used alone, the chance of switching into a mania episode is increased.

3. Antipsychotic " persons having mania episodes can use this medication; severe mania or depressive episodes can lead to psychosis, and this can be treated with antipsychotic. You can use the medication alone or your provider can also use it together with other medications especially if the patient feels nervous or is unable to sleep.

4. Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT " this is not actually a medication but rather a treatment to help people suffering from severe depression or mania episodes. Those individuals who dont respond to medications can also undergo this therapy.

The ECT is a therapy and it aims to control acute depressive and manic symptoms. It can effectively reduce mood instability and cycling and at the same time minimizing bipolar symptoms and treatment side effects. Through a management plan, the bipolar patient can return to his normal life.

Although the medications are not guaranteed to remove such condition, your mood swings can be stabilized. You can effectively control symptoms and easily cope with certain problems.

Not only is the individual affected but also their families. But with proper medications and treatment, bipolar affective disorder can be stabilized and controlled. Consult your medical provider now.
