Depression

depression is a disease that can linger and progress for months and years without detection. It is not a disease to take lightly. Studies have shown that millions of Americans will suffer some form of depression this year. It is also estimated that less than a third will actually seek some form of treatment for their affliction. In many cases the afflicted do not even realize that they are ill.

It is normal in this day in age to fall prey to the stress that rules our lives. The road blocks in life have become more severe. Hand to mouth survival is common. The competition to keep a job has been enhanced by the crisis in our economy. Stress can give birth to depression.

There are a lot of types of depression with many of the labels being similar in meaning. These labels include manic depression, medical depression, clinical depression and mental depression. There is also severe depression which typically refers to the final stages of the disease.

Depression can result from a variety of causes. One school of thought holds that it's due to chemical imbalances or simple biology. DNA also carries depression. If your mother and great grandmother suffered depression it's possible you will too.

Different types of depression are given birth by other similar factors. Substance abuse can lead to depression. Alcohol or drugs both show links to depression. In many cases the loss of a loved one has shown an enhanced possibility of depression.

Mental depression has taken a bad rap down through history. It was considered a personal fault before it was recognized as a disease. As a result the patient was often shunned and treatment wasn't applied. Each depression phase has it's own negative results. Early detection is best when treating depression.

Once the disease has progressed to severe depression the illness must be treated. Thoughts or attempts at suicide are not uncommon when depression has reached this level. For the sufferer, feelings of hopelessness and sadness can be so overwhelming that day to day living becomes extremely difficult.

Medications and therapy combine for a working treatment. Support groups can also help. There are also natural herbs you can use to treat the disease. Help is out there no matter the type of depression. Seek medical help if you or anyone you know shows signs of depression.
