A Look at Cures For Depression

by Jackson Katz

Without realizing it or accepting it, many Americans suffer from some sort of depression. Studies estimate that the number of Americans who suffer from depression is at least 14 million. Unfortunately only a very small percent, less than 1/3, will go for treatment.

Why do many who suffer never solicit help? Well, there was a time in our history when those who suffered mental illness were shunned by society. It was common to lock away people in facilities for the mentally ill when they exhibited signs of depression. Maybe it's due to the fact that depression is considered a mental illness. Nobody wants that label applied to them. Although times have changed, the old stererotype still exists. This influences many Americans to keep their illness to themselves.

Many factors contribute to depression. It is not a simple diagnosis. So much needs to be taken into consideration, such as genetics, biology and even outside influences. Drug abusers and alcoholics can develop depression, but so can people just dealing with every day life situations and stress. Depression can come from all of these elements.

Are there treatments for sufferers? Fortunately there are also many treatments and cures for depression. Which option is the best for someone who suffers with depression may be dependent on each individual on a case-to-case basis.

Methods of treatment that are safe and that work to cure depression do exist. Here are some of the factors considered when these options are examined. Has the treatment been clinically proven to be effective for depression? Has the method been accepted in accordance with high quality control standards? For treatments using prescription drugs or herbal supplements, does it contain the appropriate and safe amounts of ingredients? Below is a discussion of some of the typical treatment methods.

Prescription drugs and psychotherapy, combined, has been a common treatment for many forms of depression. To treat depression a typical type of drug recommended is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI. First used in the U.S. in 1988, Prozac has become on of the most common. Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are just some of those that have followed it. All have been proven to be effective.

But side effects are common, including causing more depression. That's the reason natural treatments are gaining popularity. One herbal cure gaining popularity quickly is St Johns Wort extract. It should contain 3-5% hyperforin to be effective. It's success rate is similar to that of Prozac but with fewer side effects. Regardless, a cure does no good, if those who have the disease don't seek treatment. If you or someone you know suffers from depression seek medical attention immediately.
